There is an article on Global Warming/Climate Change in this issue of the City Paper which quoted me grossly out of context. It was about a panel discussion at Villa Julie College in April and claims that I disrupted the event and called Global Warming "propaganda". In fact, I was referring to a connection made between Global Warming and Hurricane Isabel. The article itself ignored my credentials: Ivy League Degree in Meteorology, adjunct professor and co-creator of a Climate Class at Villa Julie College (and invited to speak at the event), board member of Maryland's Science Center's Science on a Sphere content development (including global measurements), etc. It also falsely represented my true position. I will not dignify the article any more here, however Tony had placed an e-mail to the editors inviting them and the writer on our show this Sunday to discuss it. I hope they will indulge us. However, the article's slant and fiction still prove my point: The media can distort information. The writer neglected to mention anything about our conversation afterwards, where I defended myself as a supporter of environmental awareness and policy, but not of bad journalism. My goal is to expose people to all sides of this issue, not always seen on TV or in magazies. My position has always supported the notion of global warming. I have seen Saint Mary's Glacier in Colorado first hand to prove it, and teach about Mt. Kilimanjaro to my students. I just believe there is more at work than pollution, and not the worse case scenario other's claim. Other valid contributors to warming are often ignored:
Urban sprawl and over development enlarging the urban heat islands.
Increased Solar Flux
Large El Nino's from 1983-1997 as heat sources.
Natural Climate Variability. It has been documented throughout the course of planetary history- before humans.
These are just to name a few. We have had very constructive discussions in the past about Climate Change and have been very kind to our guests. Perhaps Tom Hopkins from V.J.C. or Chris Fox from CCBC will join us again as well. However to the writer of the article, Ralph Brave: You may have been looking to pin me as the bad guy, but you have displayed poor journalism. Check your facts, check your quotes, and write fair for the people, not jaded for your agenda. You got it wrong and you got the wrong guy!
